The EU member states, including Italy, have until December 17, 2021, to transpose the EU Whistleblower Protection Directive into national law. Italy, unlike many of its European counterparts, already has established whistleblowing laws in place, but these are fragmented and will need to be aligned and updated to reflect the new Directive. Italian organisations with more than 250 employees will be required to comply with the updated rules by the end of 2021. This article will summarise the main differences between the current public and private sector regulations, and the EU Directive, as well as what preparations organisations should be making now.
